An allergy is a reaction of the immune system to some substances which can be delivered into the body through various routes.
Some substances, like pollen or dander can be inhaled, while the others, like penicillin or insect venom can be injected. Even a slight touch, like a contact with latex in surgical gloves, may trigger an allergy. It can be ingested through food, especially milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, fin fish, wheat and soy.

Allergies strike our bodies when the they start thinking that innocuous particles are perilous invaders. The immune system does everything to banish these allergens from the body by removing them with mucus or tears, sneezing or removing them with nose rubbing.
It constricts the airways in order to stop the allergens from entering into the lungs. These are all typical reactions to viruses and toxins. Allergies cannot be entirely prevented.

Allergy shots contain small amounts of allergens - the substances that the patients are allergic to. Treatment with allergy shots is also known as immunotherapy.
The most common allergens include mold and pollen from grasses, trees and ragweed.
So, for example, if a person is allergic to grass pollen, the shot will include a small amount of grass pollen. Immunotherapy not only forces symptoms to disappear, but it can really help preclude the amplification of the ilness into asthma and reduces the number of allergies.

A food allergy, (hypersensitivity) is an untypical reaction to a food caused by the immune system. Food allergies usually strike during the first three years of life. People who have a family history of such allergies or wider allergic family history (asthma, eczema) are more prone to suffer from food allergy.
