Organic kiwi fruit comprises much higher levels of compounds thought to offer importat benefits for human health, suggests the research conducted by the scientists at a University of California.
The investigators grew two identical plots of kiwi fruit. One of them was grown organically and one was given the standard mix of herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizer, Agence France Presse informed.
When mature, the organic kiwi fruit had eighteen per cent and 27 per cent respectively higher levels of polyphenols and antioxidant activity. Moreover, the organic fruit had much higher levels of vitamin C. The findings of the study were published in the journal Chemistry & Industry.
Polyphenols are thought to decrease cholesterol and boost blood circulation. Some studies have indicated that polyphenols can also help prevent some types of cancer, AFP informed. Antioxidants are thought to neutralize free radicals that may damage cells, leading to poor health and ilnesses.
