According to the latest study conducted by Swedish scientists, high levels of sugar in blood escalate a woman’s risk of developing cancer.
The 13-year research involving 64 500 participants carried out by the investigators from the University of Umea discovered that high blood sugar was correlated with an elevated risk for cancers of the pancreas, skin, womb and urinary tract in women. High levels of blood sugar were also connected with greater risk for breast cancer for women below the age of 49, according to BBC News.
The research also discovered that in general, women with the highest blood sugar levels were at 26 per cent greater risk for developing cancer than those with the lowest blood sugar levels.
The correlation between high blood sugar and elevated cancer risk was not observed in male participants.
"The findings of this study are concerning," said Dr Greg Martin, science and research manager for the World Cancer Research Fund UK., which helped finance the research. "Nevertheless, (the findings) are relevant due to the fact that if women are aware of the facts, they can be much more motivated to change their lifestyle if their blood sugar levels are too high."
