Could the deficiency of iron constitute the key to baldness?

The scientists from the Cleveland Clinic, who analyzed scientific literature on the connection published over the past 40 years, claim that the answer is yes.

"If physicians can entirely understand the relationship between deficiency of iron and hair loss, then they can help patients re-grow hair more successfully," stated research leader Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, head of clinical research in the department of dermatology.

The review of data indicates that deficiency of iron may be associated with some of the most widespread types of hair loss. Nevertheless, there is not enough evidence to recommend universal screening for the deficiency of iron in hair-loss patients and further study is necessary, the investigators explained.

The results of the research appear in the May issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
