While ear infections are normally regarded as being caused by bacteria, childhood ear infections frequently result from both viruses and bacteria - and that can bring about several treatment complications, reveals Finnish research.
According to CBC News, the scientists analyzed samples from seventy nine children suffering from acute otitis media and discovered that bacteria were present in 92 per cent of the cases, viruses in 70 per cent, and both bacteria and viruses in two-thirds of the patients.
The scientists informed that the findings were logical due to the fact that acute otitis media is almost always connected with viral respiratory infection. The research appears in the December 15 issue of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Nowadays, antibiotics constitute typical treatment for ear infections. These results indicate that antibiotics are at best only partly successful in the majority of cases, CBC News reported.
The investigators explained that the good news is that their results indicate that a lot of children will recover from ear infections on their own without any antibiotic treatment.
