Almost 17 million people suffer from Asthma. It is a condition which makes breathing difficult. It needs constant medical attention. This is a disease that is very serious to take lightly.

If you are affected with asthma and want to know exactly what you can do to improve your situation, here are some suggestions. No matter what efforts you make, you may land back at the doctors coughing and out of breath. This is normal for people with Asthma and you should not be discouraged.

At the clinic you should ask your physician some questions to come up with a reasonable solution. First of all you should find out if it is connected with the environment, because this is the environment that plays an essential role in this disease. Most of asthma patients suffer from this disease as they are allergic to something in the air.

Some of the main causes of allergies leading to asthma are: dusts, mites, pollen, inhaling smoke etc. It is essential to find out which of these is the cause, as then your physician may chose proper medication for you. The doctor can also help you in removing elements that cause your asthma.

The second is the element at the office that makes the condition worse for you. This can be proven if you become better on the weekends or while you are on vacations. Another third thing is that you might not be taking the medicines appropriately. Many patients don’t follow exactly the instructions given to them by the physicians seriously enough or find them difficult to follow.

If you have problems with following the instructions ask your physician for help. Another reason may be that you do not use the inhaler correctly. If it is so, then not enough medication is reaching your lungs. You may be advised by your physician to use a special device called ‘a spacer’ that helps to get the drug deeper in the lungs.

Another thing that may happen is that medication is unproper for you. Try to change it - sometimes one medication works better than the other. It could also be caused by allergies, if so you may need to have to take an allergy shot. In medical terminology it is known as “immunotherapy”.

Lastly, your awareness of asthma may be very helpful. The more you know about the disease that is affecting you the better your situation will be when you face a problem. Consult your physician and ask him to explain to you everything about the disease. It could not even be Asthma but another disease showing Asthma symptoms. In such situation your healthcare provider may want to do other tests on you to know the cause of your problems.

The problem with many patients is that they don’t realize how bad the level of Asthma is. If you want to know how badly you are affected, “A peak flow meter’ may be obtained. All that you haves to do is to blow in the tube which tells you the stage of your Asthma is.
