According to the Toronto Globe and Mail, a recent American research findings eliminate the popular theory that taking contraceptives causes weight gain.

Scientists analyzed 44 previous studies that concluded that women using contraceptives are typically in an age group likely to put on weight. However, birth control pills are a very comfortable excuse for that weight gain.

The analysis was conducted for Family Health International, a non-profit organization located in North Carolina. The findings were published in the Cochrane Library.

"This review found no evidence to support a causal association between contraceptives and weight gain," said study author and epidemiologist Laureen Lopez.

She said that it is natural that women and men gain weight as they age. Women have come to blame contraceptives for this weight gain, a misconception often bolstered by the women’s physician’s, the Globe and Mail reported.
