According to recent research, only 5 per cent young people in Norway between the age of 13 and 15 smoke every day. The number has been diminished by 50 per cent in five years.
The survey was conducted for the Department of Health by TNS Gallup. It examined more than 4000 students of secondary schools.
Aftenposten states that the number of young people who try to smoke, and who smoke now and then has also been diminished.
Managing director of the Health Directorate, Bjoern-Inge Larsen emphasizes that such
a reduction in smoking habits of young people is extraordinary. He says that similar reduction has not been noticed in any other country.
Only 7 per cent of youth examined in the survey believe they will start smoking by the time they are 20.
