When Janice Gray moved to Gillette in December 1996, her life was out of control. As a stay-at-home mother she didn’t know anyone, and was very lonely. She didn’t realize that her weight was steadily rising.
She says that a year later she was at the lowest point of her life. Due to it, she made the New Year’s Resolution to lose the weight.
When she joined Weight Watchers in January she weighed 175 pounds. The program attracted her because nothing was off limits; the only thing was that food had to be eaten in moderation. She had no choice but to make permanent changes.
By June she lost 40 pounds, so she weighs 175 pounds now. “It was the first time in a long time that I had control,” she said. But it wasn’t easy.
According to Gray’s husband, Kenn, there are times when everybody struggles when attempting to achieve his goals. His wife stuck with it. She was very precise in writing down everything she consumed and still does.
Gray says that “journaling” is a very important part of losing weight, as most people do not realize what they consume. However, for Gray the support of her family was the most helpful.
Kenn Gray claims that their family never felt deprived because the Weight Watchers program doesn’t eliminate or dramatically limit eating. It only helps people choose better food.
Currently, Janice Gray is a leader of Weight Watchers, and inspires people who are where she was a few years ago. She says that every day she gains new knowledge about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She learns mainly from the participants.
