News category: Weight Loss  Posted on Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

According to Pam Dyson, Dietitian in Oxford, weight loss is one of the most effective dietary therapies for improving outcomes in the 90 per cent of people with both type 2 diabetes and many people with type 1 diabetes who are either overweight or obese.

Though, effective weight loss is one of the most challenging lifestyle interference for patients suffering from diabetes. There is no doubt that conventional weight loss strategies, focusing on raising knowledge and advice giving, are not effective at all at promoting behaviour change.

BBC research into various weight loss programmes

Research carried out lately by the BBC involved three hundred volunteers with obesity who did not experience diabetes. The participants were divided into groups who undertook different forms of weight loss programmes: Atkins diet; Weight Watchers; Slim-Fast; Rosemary Conley diet; and a control group who did not experience any interference at all.

A 6-month follow-up discovered no difference between all the groups. An typical weight reduction of 5.5 kg was came along with great individual variations ranging from 28 kg loss to a 6.5 kg gain. What the research demonstrated was that it does not matter what you do as long as you do it!

It is very important that the patient is permitted to follow their own agenda and choose a programme suitable to them. This abandons the idea that there is a perfect method for weight loss and that this is applicable to all persons no matter the circumstance.
