There are lots of diseases and disorders, particularly in children, that are frequently misunderstood. Many people’s lives are ruined annually due to the fact, that people do not recognize the medical problems they face and do not know that they can be effectively treated.

The lack of awareness of certain problems that was so common is now being corrected or at least controlled. Fortunately, nowadays the awareness of various curable disorders is being spread, and due to this consciousness in recent years many people’s lives have been saved. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) is only one of such conditions.

ADHD:
This disorder is very characteristic for many children, but adults as well. This disorder makes it impossible for the patients to maintain their concentration. The patients lack the ability to concentrate on what everyone else is doing or saying, and as a consequence, they are left behind the rest of their competitors. Frequently, in class, students suffering from ADHD are not able to concentrate and also disturb others around them.

And in this is the point in which school authorities and teachers had made the most serious mistakes. They were convinced that such children (pupils) are either deliberately disturbing the class or they are incapable of being regular learners.

They took for granted that fact that these children had serious problems with learning or were mentally retarded. However, nowadays there are various possibilities of treating such types of children, and also teachers specialized in dealing with these kinds of students.

TREATMENTS FOR ADHD:
There are several treatments available for people suffering from ADHD, and they even have their levels of success. The treatments that are the most commonly used include the medical ones in the form of pills.

These are all basically diverse types of a single medication used for the treatment of ADHD, called methylphenidate. There are a few different types of actions that can be caused by each of the pills.

Ritalin and Focalin are the most commonly prescribed ADHD pills, which have a permanent effect on the person for three to five hours. However, the most frequently used medication is Ritalin. Some scientists have has several objections to its use, however, in most cases it is still the most successful treatment.

Apart from short-acting Ritalin, there is also Ritalin SR that acts for a period of anywhere between three to eight hours. Furthermore, there are also other medications such as Metadate ER, and Methylin ER, which persist in the organism for the same period of time.

Additionally, there are longer-acting pills as well, for example Concerta, Ritalin LA and Metadate CD. They are known to have long-lasting effects of as many as eight to twelve hours, but they can be used once a day only.

COUNSELING:
Apart from these medications, there are others that are also proved to be successful. However, in spite of the success that these medications have had with ADHD patients, it must be emphasized that it should be accompanied by counseling in order to achieve better results. Some scientists suggest that these medications should not be used due to the possible side effects that may appear in the long run.

They strongly believe that therapy is the best solution for the problem of ADHD. However, in order to achieve the best results in quick time, both the therapy and taking drugs are recommended.

TEACHING ADHD STUDENTS:
Apart from the medicines and therapy that ADHD patients require, when they are in the process of learning it must be asserted that particular steps have to be taken as well in order to simplify their work. Nowadays, several strategies to keep such students away from distraction are being introduced.

Normally, children with ADHD are kept right in front of the teacher and are often given shorter tasks to complete. These are usually increased in terms of duration in order to help them pick up mental stamina and better concentration.
