Every single thing that people are not familiar with is usually surrounded with information that may not be true. This is due to the fact that people theorize and assume in order to define what an unfamiliar thing is.

Breast cancer is a good example of such a pattern; there have been various myths about this disease, but they have been proven to be false with the passage of time. However, it is worth noting that some of these assumptions were truly believed.

Thus, continued survey helps to reveal whether or not claims and assumptions have any stable ground to stand on. Some myths concerning breast cancer are listed below and are interesting to give attention to.

   1. Initially it was supposed that only elderly women can suffer from breast cancer. This is obviously not true as there have been cases where younger females have suffered from breast cancer. It must be stated that a woman can develop breast cancer, no matter how young she is. It is also claimed that a women is never too young to have breast cancer.
   2. Another myth is that if a female has at least oneof the risk factors she will definitely develop breast cancer at some stage of her life. This has been proven to be incorrect, too. The truth is that if a woman has any of the risk factors, it only means that she is at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
   3. It has been claimed that if no member of a family has breast cancer, there is no reason for women in this family to be afraid of the disease. This is simply not true because other risk factors also exist. What is more, it should be understood that if a woman has more risk factors, it only means that she is at a higher risk of developing the disease. In other words, if a person has more of the risk factors but at the same time has no family history of breast cancer it is still possible for her to develop the disease.
   4. It was believed that a person could develop breast cancer only if the maternal members of the family had a history of the disease. This is false due to the fact that genetic heredity could result in traits of breast cancer to be passed from both maternal and paternal sides of the family.
   5. It has also been believed that underarm deodorants and antiperspirants cause breast cancer. This myth has also been shattered - this is simply assumption and there is no clinical data to confirm it.
   6. It is disputed whether contraceptive pills actually result in cancer. It is said that older contraceptive pills, produced sometime ago, had resulted in women to develop slightly higher risks of the disease. However, nowadays it is said that modern contraceptive pills provide some protection against the breast cancer.
   7. It has been suggested that foods rich in fat are responsible for developing breast cancer. However, according to experts, that is false.
   8. Self-examination has been seen as the best way for women to check their breasts every month. Now it is claimed that a monthly mammography is the best method to determine if a person is in the initial stages of the disease.
   9. It has been claimed that if a person is at high risk of getting breast cancer there is nothing a person can do about it. Now it has been stated that there is a great deal of things that people can do. There are numerous ways to avoid cancer through eliminating certain consumable foods and drinks. An example is the consumption of alcohol. The experts claim that drinking alcohol on a daily basis results in breast cancer in some females.
  10. People often think that being diagnosed with breast cancer equals the end. This is obviously not true as 80 per cent of females pull through the disease, and among those who do not, are able to live for five years or more.
