News category: General News, Stop Smoking  Posted on Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

There are lots of various social, economic and environmental issues. However, health issues are appearing at the fastest rate. Outdoor contamination is degrading the natural environment, but indoor contamination, that is constantly increasing, is harming not only the health of the smoker but also the health of all his/her family members.

That is why smoking is regarded as a source of indoor pollution. It severely affects the health of both the smoker and all the persons in his/her surrounding. These include newborns, pregnant women and elderly people.

There are two consequences: first of all, the internal system of a human body is harmed and secondly, the end is early death. People must also realize and understand that the after effects of smoking cigarettes would be more hazardous for women, especially during the pregnancy. Everybody has to realize the dangers connected with smoking and should make it a priority to give up smoking, especially when carrying a baby.

Addiction to cigarettes is actually addiction to nicotine, and hence this habit is really hard to break. However, the first step in the strategy to give up smoking should be realizing the hazardous effects of smoking. Then one may plan the strategy of giving up the activity of smoking. When a smoker finally realizes the dangers related to smoking, it becomes very easy for him/her to give up smoking by following particular steps or by consulting a doctor and following his suggestions.

WHY GIVING UP SMOKING IS SO HARD
When we think of the problem of smoking, one important question arises: why do so many people smoke? As far as the results of a general survey taken from some smokers are concerned, I suppose that the addiction to smoking is caused by many factors. However, the basis for this addiction may be the immature psychology where the youth is concerned. Young people copy their parents, just because they think smoking will give them a mature and elder look and that they will become more impressive and attractive for the opposite sex.

Such way of thinking constitutes a straight way to a habit and then addiction. On the other hand, there are also other reasons for smoking cigarettes. For example, men smoke because of social and domestic pressures or due to the financial problems they undergo. In such situation, they psychologically feel more relaxed and tend to believe that this is helpful in mastering the challenges and coming up with new creative ideas that finally leads to solution.

However, this misconception leads to making them physically weak and mentally relaxed at the same time. But this is the psychological and social reason that urges a person towards smoking whilst drugs such as nicotine traps the smoker and makes him addicted. Hence, addictive substance in a cigarette or cigar is nicotine. This is a highly addictive and dangerous stimulant. According to different scientists, human body gets addicted to nicotine easily, because it is even more addictive substance then heroin and cocaine.

Men and women become addicted to smoking equally often.

However, being addicted to a particular habit or behavior is very common because it results from human’s psychology and nature. But smoking is one of the most common psychological and behavioral addictions, which adversely affects human’s organism and health.

For example, the inhaled smoke of cigarettes contains about 4,000 chemical substances, which are associated with such diseases as cancer. Furthermore, among these chemicals there are substances that are not only injurious to human health but also stimulating human’s body towards addiction.

Therefore, the substances included in a cigarette are nicotine, tars and carbon monoxide. Although slightly more men than women are smoking addicts, teenage smoking girls (between the age of 15 and 19) outnumber their male counterparts. What’s interesting, the highest level of tobacco use is reported among young adults between 20 to 24 years old.

“Canadian Cancer Society” reports that nicotine that is present in tobacco creates dependency in the human’s body. Very often this makes new smokers sick and on the other hand it produces relaxing, stimulating, or other pleasurable or rewarding effects.

Thus tobacco-containing nicotine is a powerful mood-altering substance, which upon inhaling gets promptly into the bloodstream and hits the brain with in 6 seconds. The actual culprit behind the addiction is both psychological and physical dependence on cigarette.

No matter what the motivating force is behind smoking but one fact can not be denied: the fact that smoking cigarettes can lead to addiction, in the same way as people get addicted to alcohol, tranquilizers and other drugs, where nicotine is an extremely stimulating drug resulting in a smoking addiction.
