There are some reasons why people experience hair loss. It is known that genetics, nutrition, illness and some treatments are responsible for this process. Taking these reasons into consideration, it must be stated that there are two chief forms of hair loss. Hair loss takes place either in patches or as an overall hair loss of the scalp.

Overall hair loss of the scalp is well known in males and is especially recognized by loss of hair at the crown of the head. If this kind of hair loss is compared to females, it must be stated that there are two plausible reasons. These include Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) as well as the arrangement of hair follicles in males and females

It is claimed that females are less impacted by hair loss. However, some people argue that this condition is not sex-related. According to observation, males tend to lose more hair than females. It is even determined that young males tend to lose more hair than their female peers. The causes provided for this include the fact that Dihydrotestosteron acts on males with hair follicle arrangement.

To begin with, hair follicle arrangement in males allows on aggregation of sebaceous substances produced by the sebaceous gland next to each follicle.

Since the follicle position is perpendicular, it favors aggregation and not draining off that happens with follicles in females. Their follicles do not support aggregation of sebaceous substances due to the fact that the angle that female hair follicles make with the scalp is significantly less than in case of male follicles.

Since the male follicles allow aggregation of sebaceous substances it becomes clogged. Such a clogging disturbs proper hair growth, and since this may occur in a number of hair follicles at the same time, hair growth is blocked. In males, this is a problem, as men in their late teens to their forties may experience stunted hair growth. In contrast to this, females do not experience this condition.

What is more, it must be stated that it has also been determined that action of enzyme is also responsible for the condition. An enzyme converts testosterone to DHT, a chemical  that is the main reason for hair loss in males. In females this is not a problem due to the hormonal differences between the sexes.

It is believed that DHT is responsible for so-called ‘male pattern baldness’. It is claimed that between the ages of 19 and 40 DHT may start acting on a male’s scalp resulting in hair thinning and hair loss. Means of combating DHT have been invented in the form of prescription drugs.

One particular drug is Propecia that is only suitable for males. Women are not affected by DHT, thus Propecia cannot be beneficial for them. What is more, pregnant women should not even handle it due to the fact that the drug is highly active. However, men are usually recommended to consume this prescription drug for a specified period of time.

Finally, it must be said that research on hair loss issue continues and there is a tendency to concentrate on male pattern baldness rather than on female hair loss. This result from the fact that females suffer from hair loss less than males. However, medical treatment or giving birth of a child may cause baldness in females as well.
